About Religious Freedom Sunday

Religious Freedom Sunday is a great time for churches to inform their congregations about the religious liberties of public school students.

The U.S. Department of Education has issued guidelines clarifying students' religious liberties four times since 1995 (most recently on May 15, 2023). However, these guidelines have not received local distribution within schools. Some states even have laws requiring this document be distributed, yet they are not. Churches must bring light to the issue for students, teachers and parents.

To help churches carry out this task, Gateways to Better Education has published the Free to Speak pamphlet. This pocket-sized summary of the U.S. Department of Education guidelines explains students' religious liberties.

Churches across America use Religious Freedom Sunday as an opportunity to distribute the Free to Speak pamphlets to students and their families.
